Public Transport in Vienna

Getting around Vienna

Especially if you're visiting Vienna for the first time, the variety of transportation options can be overwhelming.

Our beautiful city offers excellent transport connections and various means of transport to help you quickly get from A to B, whether you’re exploring the city, attending appointments, or meeting friends.

This article aims to provide you with an overview of the transportation options in Vienna, allowing you to navigate the city more freely and flexibly.

Since our serviced and business apartments are centrally located, all the listed means of transportation are easily accessible for you.

ÖBB trains in Austria offer a comfortable and affordable way to travel. For example, if you want to get from Schwechat Airport to the city, you can travel this route by train. You can buy tickets at the ticket machines or directly in the ÖBB App. Otherwise, you will probably prefer to get around by subway, tram or bus, especially for short trips.

The City Airport Train (CAT) is the fastest way to get non-stop from Schwechat Airport to the city center and an alternative to the ÖBB trains. You can buy tickets online or via ticket machines. The price for a single trip is €14,90 (one way) or €24,90 for a return trip.

Subway

There are 5 subway lines in Vienna (U1, U2, U3, U4, U6). You can get your tickets from ticket machines, online, via the App or at staffed counters. We highly recommend the WienMobil app from Wiener Linien. This app helps you navigate the public transport system efficiently and provides you with the most time-saving route suggestions.

Tram

Riding the tram is probably the most beautiful way to get around Vienna. The classic Viennese trams, in particular, evoke the feeling of being in 19th-century Vienna. You can often see the most beautiful parts of Vienna by taking a tram, for example when you drive along the Ring Street.

Bus

In addition to the subway and tram, you can also get to your destinations using Vienna’s buses. While tram lines are designated with numbers (e.g. 71, with the exception of lines D and O), the distinction to buses is made by adding the letter A (e.g. 14A).

Wien Karte

Single tickets for trips to Vienna can be purchased for €2,40, but also as 24, 48 or 72 hour tickets. The tickets are valid once they have been validated with the stamp machine, which can be found either at the station or on the public transport of your choice. Hourly tickets are also called Wien Karte and are valid for any number of journeys. This card also gives you discounted entry to various museums and discounts at selected restaurants and shops.

Weekly Rides

The weekly ticket is valid from Monday 0:00 a.m. to the following Monday 9:00 a.m. This means you can travel on all Vienna public transport routes for an entire calendar week and even pass the card on to someone else if necessary.

If you need a network map of the Wiener Linien, you can download it as a PDF. If you have the WienMobil App, the map is already integrated there.

If the weather is pleasant, we recommend renting a bicycle from the city of Vienna to cover your route in an environmentally friendly way. You can find the so-called CityBike in many well-known places in Vienna and even use it free of charge for up to an hour.

Several carsharing companies offer a wide range of high-quality car models that you can rent for your journey. The price, which varies depending on the model, is billed per minute, with all additional costs already included in the final price. The average price per minute is 35 cents, but this rate is reduced for longer journeys with hourly packages (e.g., 3 hours from €29.00).

One major advantage of this transportation option is that there is no mandatory membership fee. You can easily park your car within the business area, even in short-term parking zones, without any issues.

This popular means of transport has been available in Vienna for some time. The scooters can be found almost everywhere in Vienna and are particularly practical for short and spontaneous journeys. You have the choice between several providers: Bird, Lime, Tier and MAX. You can register using the associated App. The price is ultimately billed per minute.
Please note, however, that the scooters may only be parked in specially marked areas and that there are administrative penalties for incorrect parking.
